Whether you’re living in Florida or just visiting for a few days, there are plenty of opportunities for adventure, fun and excitement without having to shell out mega-bucks at a theme park. So, slather on some sunscreen, grab plenty of water and let’s hit the road!

Some tips to remember when exploring Florida's outdoors:

1.   Don't forget the sunscreen -- even under overcast skies. Florida's sun can be brutal, especially to fair-skinned tourists. Overcast skies can be deceiving, the sun is just as strong even if you can't see it.

2.  Bring plenty of water. Humidity and strong sun rays create a powerful combination that can spell dehydration if you aren't careful.

3.  Wear comfortable shoes. Spiky heels and flip flops aren't practical when hiking along nature trails or climbing lighthouse steps.

4.  Don't bother the wildlife. The alligator you see basking in the sun may look disinterested, but be wary. Feeding such creatures also is a no-no, because it could cause wildlife to lose natural distrust of humans as well as to equate humans with food.

5.  Make sure you have the necessary permits. Some wildlife preserves and management areas require visitors to get a special permit or pay a daily use fee. Being caught without a required permit could result in a hefty fine.

6. Carry insect repellent. Mosquitos frequent swampy areas, and can be especially thick during the summer months. Tiny "no-see-ums" come out arounnd sundown and can be irritating.* Bring a first-aid kit. Just in case something unexpected happens, you want to be prepared.

7.  Have fun!
